In eastern Afghanistan, a powerful 6.0 earthquake shattered communities already burdened by years of hardship. Families lost their homes, loved ones, and access to food and water. Together with our partner, Instant Aid, we set up a kitchen in Nurgal—near the quake’s epicenter—and began serving meals to families and patients in medical centers. What started with 1,000 daily meals quickly grew to 8,000 as needs escalated along with water distribution. In total, we provided over 1.5 million meals and 525,000+ gallons of water.
Instant Aid has supported WCK’s previous responses in the region. This marked the third time we have partnered in response to an earthquake in Afghanistan, after serving hundreds of thousands of meals following quakes in 2022 and 2023. Together, we also responded to flooding in Afghanistan in 2022 and to the earthquakes in Türkiye in early 2023.
